  • Why isn't my Square Reader connecting properly?

Sometimes you might run into trouble keeping your Square Reader connected to your iPad kiosks. The Square Reader might show as connected, but not have the option to insert or tap a card for payment. Follow these steps to help troubleshoot your Square Reader.

  1. The first thing you might want to do is to check out our article on Best Practices (Section: Keep Square Chip Reader connectivity in mind) to ensure your Reader is properly set up for a good connection.

  2. If the actual connection is great, typically we've found that the most common issue for Square Reader connection issues is pairing the Reader to multiple apps at the same time, without forgetting it on the previous app. This feedback comes directly from Square as well: "If you are attempting to pair your reader with a new device or switching the reader to a different device, you must first have your reader forget its connection to the previous device." This applies to multiple apps in addition to multiple devices (e.g. Square POS and KioskBuddy). We've found that a combination of forgetting the Square Reader on the Square POS app and possibly resetting the Square Reader fix the issue.

  3. Check if the Square Reader is in the process of updating firmware. You can verify the status of your Square Reader from the KioskBuddy Home Configuration Screen. Scroll down to the section Connect to a Square Chip Reader. From here, check the status of your Square Reader connection. The status will say UPDATING_FIRMWARE while it is updating firmware and then READY once the Square Reader is successfully connected.

  4. If you're still running into issues, check out this useful article from Square for troubleshooting connection issues.
